Ember sniffed the air. Thunder grumbled in the distance, reminding her of old Bluesky. She mourned the death of her friend. Pushing out the thought she continued further into the woods on silent paws.
Heavy rainclouds crossed the sky, and a cold breeze ruffled the fur on her neck as she stalked towards Twoleg Place. She lifted her head and looked around. A pigeon lay a few paces off, scraping up leaves as it dug for food. It was unaware and would be an easy catch.
Ember dropped into a hunting position, ears pricked and eyes wide. Her tail flicked back and forth as she eyed her prey. She crawled forward. The bird was hardly a rabbit hop away. She wriggled her haunches ready to spring when....
BOOM!
Ember sprang back in surprise as the pigeon took off, frightened. Ember's fear scent was strong and she was trembling almost uncontrollably.
Fox Dung! She cursed, I would have caught that, and the thunder just scared me; thats all.
She doubted any prey would be left after that show. So, she turned herself towards camp, crossly dragging her feet. Her ears were flat against her head and her tail drooped as she trudged onward. It was dark, lit up only by an occasional flash of lightning, stretching down to the earth like a finger.
When she emerged in camp, she hauled herself towards the warriors den, sinking gratefully into her warm nest. She was soon in a dreamless sleep.
-----
Ember woke. Something was different. She lifted her head groggily and sniffed the air.
Her eyes snapped open and were as round as full moons as she recognized the dreadful smell.
Smoke!
