The only sound was the pitter-patter of his feet. He ran quickly but steadily. Finally. He stopped and stared. His destination was right in front of him. He felt it. The warmth. He closed his eyes and soaked it in. Slowly he laid down and felt the scorching hot rock touch his pelt. He sighed. Relaxation had arrived. He glanced up. The sky was clear, the sun straight above him. Noon. He needed this. Clan life was too tough for him, to tiring. He stretched out and listened carefully. He knew someone was going to come whether or not they would ruin his relaxation was another question. And another answer.

Sandypelt shook her pelt. A good swim in the river to cool me down on a hot Green-leaf day, thought Sandypelt. Now time for a nice bask in the sun. Sandypelt climbed out of the shallow water and shook her fluffy pelt. Padding over to where Sunning Rocks lay, she saw a small orange pelt. "Yodakit, or Chewkit?" She thought. The two kits had practically the same scent- they were always together. Quietly, paw-by-paw, she stepped forward. Seeing it was Chewkit, she smiled.
"Hello, Chewkit." Sandypelt said. "What are you doing out of camp?" Seeing the startled look on the kit's face, she purred. "I won't tell anyone. I am staying for a while, too. But, it is dangerous for a kit to be alone out here." She said, settling down on the warm rocks. "But, hey. You are almost an apprentice." Smiling a little, Sandypelt added- "Dawnstar told me I couldn't tell you who your mentor was. It is a surprise." Sandypelt mrrwed with laughter.

Chewy looked up at the warrior, she towered over him. "I just needed a break," he replied to her. "I feel like I am always being watched that everyone knows what I do and why. I just needed to get away, especially from my brother," he meowed, mumbling the last remains of it. He met her gaze. He purred, returning the favor of hers. "I am sorry," he apologized. He sat up and looked at her. Is she my mentor? he thought.

Sandypelt nodded. Like a physchic, she replied to his thoughts. "I am not your mentor," she purred. "I see. Your brother can be annoying, eh? I know how it feels." As not to confused the young cat, she added, "Brightkit, my sister, died. Be glad Yoda is alive." She sighed, letting the warmth sink into her paws. She lie down, and the heat spread through her otherwise freezing body. "Do you mind if I stay a while?"

Chewy was surprised she jumped to annoying. "It's not quite that," he replied, "he is just to clingy, I need my space and him and me together doesn't help the fact that we get mixed up so often. I want people to actually know me when I walk by. To know me as Chewpaw, or Chewy; not Yodakit's brother." He felt bad putting his brother down like that. "I am glad he's alive, and I want him to become more independent. For my sake and his," Chewy added.

"Interesting." Sandypelt mewed. "I see what you are saying now... everyone needs a break sometimes. It's natural we want to be independent, and you and your sibling are close. Not necessarilly too close though. Just... you wish you were different sometimes. It is... well, yeah. I know what you mean." She sighed. She couldn't even find the right words to say to an apprentice. When she talked to kits she gets embarressed. But when she talks to warriors... that's as embarressing as talking to crowfood.

Chewy looked and Sandypelt. "Words can't even describe it," he mumbled as she tried to figure out what to say. "I love him, but family is family you can't live with them, you can't live without them," he went on. He took a deep breath the hot air went through his lungs. "Being independent may one day be a curse to me, but for now I see it as a blessing that I want bestowed on me," he explained.

"Oh." she said quietly, and sat up. She padded to the river bank, and watched her blurred face reflection in the water. "I see." She got up briskly, shook her pelt out, and walked back to the smaller cat.
"How has being an apprentice been?" she asked smoothly, flattening her fur with her wet tounge. "Do you like your mentor?"
Her light sapphire look of sympathy to the cat was cut off as she sensed something. Far off, she heard a low humming noise filled her sensitive ears, and an oily smell drifted into her nose and clung. "Do you hear that?" she asked the apprentice. 'Maybe it is just the Two-Legs lumber place.' But it sounded different. "A monster?" she asked herself out loud.

Chewy watched the shecat pad to the river bank. He cleared his throat. “Being an apprentice isn’t what I had expected,” he began, “Dawnstar is very sweet, but she has a lot on her hands. It seems she doesn’t have the time for me. I haven’t even had a lesson so far,” he meowed, a bit disappointed. “She’ a great leader, but…” he didn’t know how to force the words out. He heard Sandypelt’s voice turn panicky quickly. He stood and padded over to her. The noxious smell filled his lungs and he coughed forcing it out. “I do not know what it is,” he meowed, “I’ve never even been to the Thunderpath, monsters are quite the mystery to me.”

"I know," she said, trying to relax. 'Just wait. Nothing will happen.' "Dawnstar will do something soon. Actually, I think me and Spottedpaw are going to train tommorrow, perhaps you can tag along. If Dawnstar is busy, its ok, I will watch you for a while. Dawnstar is very busy, I am sur she can train with you soon." She faintly smiled.
She sprawled on the rocks peacefully, but the smell drifted in. She wheezed. "Hold on," she said warmly to Chewpaw. She turned toward the smell, trying to block out the disgusting odor. A large screech came from the distance; closer, closer, until she could see it behind a tree in the field. It was a gray car, and fire lay on it. Smoke spread through the territory, and a scream from a twoleg was piercing the air. The twoleg was standing out there with a small device in which he punched buttons fiercely.
"Hello?" it said. "Yes, I do. I crashed my car in-" he looked disgusted around the meadow. "the middle of nowhere. Some field." 'What was he saying,' thought Sandypelt. All she knew was that the car was near the gorge.
She raced back to Chewpaw. "Something's wrong," she said immediately. "A monster is on fire. A person is there." She coughed again, and gaggled. The smoke made her dizzy, and she closed her eyes halfway. "Eek... Dawnstar..." she grumbled. "This smoke... is bad." She trailed off. She felt affected deeply by the air. "We will report to Dawnstar immediately."

Chewy liked her invitation to join Sandypelt in an apprentice lesson, but it wasn’t her job to take care of him. “I would love to train with you, but I must decline. I feel bad. I should just be patient for my leader,” he meowed. The smoke filled his lungs, he coughed. He looked at Sandypelt. “Are we going to tell Dawnstar now?” he asked. The trees were now on fire. The smoke rising into the air. Dawnstar would be able to see this from camp, but only if she was looking. He began to pad away from the smoke trying to catch his breath. It hurt his lungs and his eyes burned. He closed his eyes and listened for Sandypelt to give the go.

"Yes," she wheezed violently as the smoke shook throughout the area. The trees were all red, covered in a thick wall of flames. The breeze blew the smoke toward their eyes, and she felt a deep burning sensation. It stung. "Here, let's go tell Dawnstar. If the smoke is burning your eyes, close them, and take hold of my tail." She waited patiently for Chewy to take hold. "Let's go" she said quickly.

Chewy, was a bit confused but he grabbed Sandypelt’s tail. He closed his eyes tightly and felt the smoke burn his throat as he breathed. Chewy felt as if he was weak. The smoke hurt his quickly. What is going to happen to the clan? he thought. What if the fire doesn’t stop? We will have to get all the elder’s out of the den and warn the other clans. Where would we stay? Thoughts rambled through his head and worries filled him. He stomach ached with fear. He could feel a knot in his throat making the act of breathing much harder.

She felt the tight clamp of the apprentice, and nodded. "Kay... here we go..." She wobbled a bit, the vision blurring her eyes and making deep thought difficult. Together, they managed to get a slow walking pace through the fields of Riverclan. They kept walking, and soon Sandypelt yelled out that they were almost there.
The screens of smoke had left the clearing, and she could breath, though it was jagged as her throat stung. "Here, you can let go of my tail," she said gently.

Chewy stumbled over his feet, but caught himself, several times. You know that when your eyes are closed you usually trip, as did he. He could feel the burning in his throat fade away. When Sandypelt told him to let go, he did and he fell to the ground gasping for fresh air. It helped. He recomposed himself quickly. He stood and looked at Sandypelt. "Sorry that was a bit dramatic," he apologized for his over-reaction. He laughed at himself silently. He could almost see himself clutched to the floor breathing deeply.

Gingerpelt ran over to where they were."Are you guys ok," she saw that chewykit neede help and fast ",Mintheart where are you."Gingerpelt yowled.No answer so Gingerpelt picked up Chewy and let Sandypelt lean on."Come you guys we are almost there."Gingerpelt kept going untill she relized Sandypelt and Chewykit were propably starving.Gingerpelt but Chewykit down and very gently laid Sandypelt down.She ran to the river and in no time at all she had a couple of fish.What if they're thirsty..She thought to herself she found some moss and soaked it with water.She brought every thing to them."Come on you guys wake up." she meowed
